Conical Spring Washer / Belleville Washer (DIN 6796)
Conical (Belleville) spring washers are dished steel washers that act as a stiff spring under bolt preload. As the bolt is tightened, the cone partially flattens, storing significant elastic energy. This stored energy maintains clamp load through vibration, thermal cycling, and gasket creep.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a Belleville washer different from a split lock washer?
A Belleville washer is far stiffer and stores much more elastic energy. Under preload it doesn't fully flatten — it acts as an active spring maintaining clamp load. A split lock washer fully flattens and provides essentially negligible reserve. For maintaining preload over time, Bellevilles work; split locks largely don't.
